Quartz or Granite? Choosing Countertops for a Kitchen That Gets Used

Quartz and granite are the two countertop materials we install most often, and clients regularly ask which one is better. The honest answer is that neither wins outright. They are both durable, and they each suit a different kind of household.

Quartz is an engineered surface. It is consistent in color and pattern, it does not need sealing, and it resists staining from coffee, wine, and oil. That makes it a strong choice for busy families and for anyone who wants a clean, uniform look. Its weakness is heat: a hot pan set directly on quartz can discolor the resin, so trivets are a must.

Granite is natural stone, which means every slab is unique. It handles heat well and hides wear, and many homeowners love choosing the exact slab for their island. It does need periodic sealing, and lighter granites can show stains if spills sit overnight.

When we design a kitchen, we look at how you cook, how much maintenance you are willing to do, and how the counter works with the cabinet color and backsplash. Bring a cabinet door sample to the stone yard, look at full slabs rather than small chips, and choose in natural light when you can.
